“You don’t have the right to tell me what to do…or criticize me in any way”

“And you don’t have the right to waste your life away.  You have wasted two years of your life crying over spilled milk…Get over it!!!! Move on!  Life has way to much to offer, but if you don’t get out of your rut… You will never see the beauty that is love!”

2. Parents feeding children when they are not hungry.

Example: I was visiting my friend at her home, as she was feeding her five-year-old boy. I did not want to disturb this process so I stayed in her back yard waiting for her to finish feeding him. When she was done she and I began to prepare meals for the children that were coming over (she was babysitting for a friend).

We finished preparing food and decided to eat. While we were eating her boy came around to ask his mom permission to do something. She told him ok, but only after he ate. I almost fell off my chair. He just ate! I had to control myself or I would have said things that would have offended my friend deeply. Thankfully the kid had more brains than mom. Read More »

1. Parents running after their child to feed him/her.

Explain to me why parents run after their children to feed them. I look at it this way, if a child is hungry, he/she will either cry (if the he/she still can’t talk) or ask to be fed. When a child is hungry, they will ask for food. Children don’t live to eat. They eat to live!!!! Parents tend to forget that important fact. As you may see I am bit irritated writing this post. This topic really gets under my skin.

Example: I’m having lunch at South Street Seaport when I notice a really cute Asian toddler running around with a doll. She is having a ball running around and chasing pigeons. I alternate watching the little girl, the landscape that is before me, and the cute foreigner on my left. Since I’m extremely hungry, I eat my lunch eagerly. Read More »

I want to thank all the wonderful mothers who make parenting look so easy. Bravo!!!

I was hanging out with my friend this weekend and we decided to visit my cousin who lives near by. We arrived at my cousin’s house right as her mini party was coming to an end. We walked in as she was trying to settle down her two boys who were using each other as human punching bags. After the boys settled down, she began cleaning the mess that was left after the party and chatted with us as she went about her task. Her baby monitor was showing her third son upstairs sleeping.

As I watched my cousin take care of her children and clean up after the party she just had, I realized some really important factors. Read More »

I thought I was being bad when I accepted my first joint. I thought I am the worst of my kind. Yet I knew I had to satisfy my curiosity. I promised myself that I would never do it again. I beat myself up for caving into my desire, my need to experiment. How can I be a role model to my sister now? After all, she is my baby sister. What kind of an example would I be setting? If we were to have an honest relationship, which we do, I would have to tell her about my smoking if she ever asked me.

The first time I smoked a joint (age -24) nothing happened. Nothing happened many times after that. I just realized that it’s not a bad thing to smoke. After I broke that one rule, I have broken many other rules regarding smoking. I have smoked a cigar before – tasted really well when I smoked it slowly. I have smoked hookahs. Actually smoking hookahs is my old time favorite. They mess me up just enough and as soon as I step outside, my head is back to normal. When I need to shut my mind off or just have a good time, I smoke a joint. Of course if I’m out at a party and my friends light up, I will have a puff or two with them. Read More »

When I was growing up, I heard parents say to their children “You can go anywhere your heart desires, once you are married.” I hated that saying with passion. I could never understand why life has to begin once you are married. Is that to say we women, as a collective, are brain dead and can’t make smart logical decision on our own? Then what about the rest of the world? What about those parents that let their daughters travel, those parents must be crazy. Right?

I have to say, I’m happy about my decision to not let that phrase get in the way of my life. Though in the beginning I had to struggle to get things my way. I had a really over protective father, extremely over the top over protective father. The kind of man who would keep his daughters locked up till they are ready to be shipped off. A man who didn’t listen to anything anyone had to say, ever.

БАБЫ КАЮТСЯ, ДЕВКИ ЗАМУЖ СОБИРАЮТСЯ

“Babi kautsya, devki zamuzh sobirautsya”

In literal translation this idiom means– Married women wish to be single, while single women wish to be married. Or, the grass is always greener on the other side (at any age).

In my culture when a girl turns 18 she is good and ready to be married (“shipped off” as I call it). Most girls are married before they reach the age of 23. By the time they turn 25 there is only a scarcely few that are still single. My friends always ask why am I still single? I tell them, “Well I’m a force to be reckoned with.”

Though the pressures of marriage are very high, I love that I haven’t caved into the dogma of being an old maiden, as I have been called that once or twice. Whenever I run into my friends the first question they ask me is if I got married. When I tell them not yet, they tell me “good enjoy your life while you still can”. Most of them are married. And those who are not (there is like one) actively seek to be married. All of my married friends have children. At minimum two. Let me remind you, they are all my age – 26 or younger. Read More »

I have many options I can entertain. After many online quizzes, I now know that I’m an artistic soul. Though I knew this about myself, I was always hesitant about being open to it, because I was unsure how my family would perceive me. I knew my friends were 100% supportive of me, in whatever I did, however my family wouldn’t allow me to go into a field that is creative. There is no money in it. Not in the beginning anyway.

So my choices seven years ago were very limited. I couldn’t become a teacher (no money in it) so I had a choice of being an accountant, a pharmacist, or IT. I definitely didn’t want to be a pharmacist. WAY too repetitive, and plus everybody was doing it at that time. I didn’t want to be in IT, or a computer major. I love computers but not to that extent. Jewelry business was out of the question, not for girls. Though I could have been good at it. It’s after all selling, and I love selling what I love to wear, and jewelry is one of my passions.
